School's Out for Summer!

School's out for Summer!

The Speech Team hopes all of our Speech/Language students have a healthy, relaxing, and enjoyable summer break.  Hot news: Mrs. Llerandi has accepted a full-time Speech-Language Pathologist position at Davis Elementary School for the 2009-2010 school year.  Mrs. Wisehart and Mrs. Wheeler will remain at Blackwell serving the school-aged students, and Mrs. Lock will continue working with our preschool children.

Some tips for using your awesome speech-language skills that you have been working on this school year:

1.) Read a picture book with your parent, and then re-tell the story while looking at the pictures.  Use your best speech sounds.

2.) Have your parent ask you "wh" questions about the story, such as "what is the main idea?", and "who are the main characters?".  Be sure to use your best speech sounds.

3.) Play "I Spy" with your family to work on describing skills, explaining skills, and to use smooth speech with a slow rate.

4.) Play a story telling game.  Get a few objects or pictures and make up a silly story by taking turns and using them in the story.  Use your best speech sounds.

5.) Go to the grocery store with your parent and name the items that you put in your grocery cart.  List a few descriptors of the items, such as "it is round and red" if you were choosing an apple.  If you made a list, check off the item.  Be sure to use your best speech sounds.

February Update

Heart

February is the Month of Love!

Mrs. Wisehart's Kindergarten, First, and Second grade Language classes will be reading Arthur's Valentine.  Be sure to ask your child about Arthur's secret admirer (what is an admirer?) and about what Arthur's plan is when he meets the admirer at the movie theater.

My Love For You by Susan Roth is a wonderful story to read with your child.  See below for the powerpoint of the book.  To increase language skills, be sure to ask your child "wh" questions, such as "who", "what", and "where" questions relating to the story.

End of Year Wrap-Up

Season's Greetings Speech Students and Parents:

Ani_haha (Clip art licensed from the Clip Art Gallery on DiscoverySchool.com)

We have enjoyed working with your child during the first half of the school year.  Please encourage your child to use the strategies for his or her articulation, language, voice, or fluency skills during the winter break.  The break is a great time to review homework and to practice, practice, practice your child's specific speech sound or to review language concepts while reading a book together.

We hope that you all have a healthy and happy holiday season, and we will look forward to seeing your child back at school in January 2009!

Schedule and Folders

Hello and welcome to the Speech-Language Program! We are happy to be working with your child to meet his or her speech and/or language goals.  We have developed a schedule and your child has been assigned to a Speech-Language Pathologist---Mrs. Llerandi, Mrs. Wheeler, or Mrs. Wisehart.  All preschool speech students are served by Mrs. Lock.  Your child has received a speech folder; please be sure that your child returns this folder to school so he or she can bring it to speech class.  We will be assigning homework periodically, as it is a great reinforcer of the skills that we are working on.  We are looking forward to a great year with your child!
