May 18 - 22, 2009

Just a reminder of special events for the last week of school:

Tuesday:

First Grade Ambassadors will visit our classroom to tell us what first grade will be like for next year.

Wednesday:

Kindergarten Recognition – 10:00 - we will pass out certificates and celebrate the way your child has matured during this year.  All parents are invited to come to our room and then afterwards to eat lunch with your child to celebrate this special time.

Thursday:

Fun in the Sun Day – we will join with other Kindergarten classes to enjoy some outdoor activities.  Please wear our green class T-shirt, shorts, and tennis shoes.

Sundae Celebration – we will have a special “snack picnic.”  We will be outside so “we can all scream for ice cream!”

This week promises to be full of exciting experiences and review activities.  Your child has grown so much this year.  It has been our privilege to be a part of his/her development!

Throughout this week, we will begin sending home your child’s “things.” ON FRIDAY, MAY 22nd, YOUR CHILD SHOULD NOT BRING HIS/HER BOOKBAG TO SCHOOL.  This is a school-wide practice and makes for a less cumbersome last day.  If your child brings a lunch from home on Friday, please put it in a paper bag so everything can be thrown away after we eat.  They will not be allowed to carry anything on the bus with them that afternoon.

We have totally enjoyed being your child’s teachers!  Each child will always have a special place in our hearts!

Mrs. Young will be helping us next week in Mrs. Kirk’s absence.

We look forward to seeing your child for their last week of kindergarten!

A NOTE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL

Families – It is hard to believe that the end of the 2008-09 school year is at hand.   I know many of you would like the opportunity to have a voice in the homeroom placement of your child/children for the 2009-10 school year.  If so, please submit a letter to the attention of  Maurine Kozol and Leslie Mansfield indicating the teacher qualities you believe are a perfect match for your student/students.   Please do not request a specific teacher by name as those requests will not be honored.  Although there is no guarantee that we will be able to honor your request, we take all written suggestions into consideration.   Deadline date for submission of this letter will be Friday, May 15th.   Thank you.

Congratulations to Chloe and Jason for being our STARS for May!

SOAR time has been especially fun this week.  The children are reading their own book after I have read aloud to them.  If your child would like to bring books from home to read, he/she may do so.  Please put the books in a large zip lock bag with his/her name on it.  This will keep your books better separated from our classroom books.   If your child would like to select a book to read to the class, he/she is more than welcome to let me know.  The book needs to be fairly short and one in which they can read with ease after practicing at home.

Remember Art Night is Tuesday, May 5th.

Remember Field Day is on Friday, May 6th.  Thank you to everyone who is planning to volunteer.  If you would like to help out, please, let us know.  The coaches will be able to assign you to a spot to work.  YOUR CHILD SHOULD WEAR SHORTS, OUR GREEN CLASS T-SHIRT, TENNIS SHOES, AND SUNSCREEN.

Career Day is Thursday, May 7th.  Your child may dress up like “what he wants to be when he grows up.”  We will see special vehicles that are used in various jobs.  It will be a fun day of learning.

Please continue to make sure your child is getting adequate rest during the next few weeks.  We still want to make sure we are maximizing each moment of instructional time that we have with them.

Can you believe it is almost May?  A few short months ago your child entered “big” school for the first time.  Our hope is that this year has been one of building a strong foundation for your child’s school career.  PLEASE KEEP REINFORCING THE SKILLS WE HAVE LEARNED THIS YEAR!  Reading to and with your child is invaluable toward instilling a love of learning!  Join a summer reading club at the public library and make it a fun outing to attend weekly.  Each child deserves this as a priority in his/her life!  Keep up the good work!

Thank you to each family who made a donation of supplies!  Also, please remember to return the school picture if you have not done so already.

Here are some upcoming dates to put on your calendar:

5/1-School House Rock Program- 4:00p.m.-parent must attend with child if your child is not in ASP

5/5-Art Show 5-7p.m.

5/6-FIELD DAY – PLEASE NOTE THE CORRECTED DATE.

5/7 – Career Day – If you would like to share about your career with our class, please let me know.

5/13-Talent Show Assembly/Volunteer Tea in Media Center-9-11 a.m.

5/20-Awards Day -10:00 in our room – Stay and eat lunch with us if you would like.

5/21-Fun in the Sun Day – We will have a time of playing special games outside and a special sundae treat.

Beginning this week, we will start reading individual books during part of SOAR time.  I will read a book aloud for part of the time, and then I will give your child time to read a book of his/her choice for the remaining time.  We have books in our classroom, but your child is welcome to bring a book from home if he/she so desires.   Please make sure your name is in the book so it will not get mixed in with our classroom books.  This will be good preparation for next year, because most of the 1st grade classrooms have individual reading during the entire SOAR time.

We have had a CHallenging week as we have CHewed gum, played CHeckers, CHased balls,  and best of all, Chuckled a lot!  We are so glad to be your CHild’s teachers!

HELP!!!  We are in need of SNACKS once again!  If everyone will send in a  box of crackers, cereal, or cookies, we should have enough for the rest of the school year (we’ll see!).

HELP!!!  We are also in need of PAPER TOWELS and TISSUES.  If you are able, please consider sending in a roll of paper towels if you have a boy or a box of tissues if your child is a girl.  Thank you!

Remember to return the registration card for next year if you have not done so already.

Just a reminder that on Wednesday, May 6th, Blackwell will have its annual Field Day.  This is a day of outside activities coordinated by our coaches.  We are in need of adult volunteers to help make this day a success.  They would like to have volunteers from each classroom.  If at all possible, please try to arrange your schedule so you can help.  The coaches are asking that no younger siblings accompany the volunteers that day.  The activities will need the adult’s full attention in order for the day to go smoothly.  We have at least 30 or more volunteer jobs that need to be filled.  Write me a note and let me know if you would be able to help with any or all of that day’s activities.  Thank you for making this sacrifice for your child!

We are enjoying seeing the great sentences that you are encouraging your child to complete for their homework on Wednesday night.  On Thursday morning, we let each child read his/her sentences for the class so he/she can “show off” their hard work.  This assignment combines reading and writing at home.   This is a good way to reinforce what we are learning at school and to ensure that your child is ready for first grade.  We have seen remarkable growth this year, yet the work we will do in the upcoming days is critical to anchor the concepts we have been learning all year.

During the last weeks of school, we will be reviewing all the letters and learning some new “reading tricks.”  The take-home books that are sent home each night will continue to enhance your child’s reading abilities.  Let’s take advantage of this important “spring training!”

We hope you have a great Spring Break!  When we return to school, we will be learning about the Ch sound.   Our Words of the Week will be child and children.  What a delightful week we will have as we will be chewing gum, chasing tennis balls, drawing with chalk, making paper chains, and playing with other children!

Thank you to each one who donated eggs for our egg hunt.  We had an “egg-stra” special hunt!

Your child is growing and developing at an amazingly fast pace.  Enjoy every moment!

We love your child!

We are enjoying seeing your child progress and grow.  This is an important time of year to reinforce and review the concepts we have covered so far this year.  We are also introducing new concepts as well.  Keep reading with your child!  This is so important.  Encourage them to sound out words that they might not know.  Of course, applaud their efforts.  You are building their confidence which encourages them to become a better reader!

We will be returning all library books on Wednesday, but we will not check any out until after Spring Break.  This makes it easier to ensure that no books are left at Grandma’s house (or wherever).

Wednesday, April 1st, is the day for parents to register their child for kindergarten next year.  They may come by the school or bring their child to see “big school” and receive a packet of helpful materials for next year.  Please tell any friends or neighbors that you know who might have a child entering kindergarten next year.

Remember that the week of April 6-10 is Spring Break, BUT until then, please make sure your child is getting adequate sleep each night.  These days are so important to your child’s future academic success and rest is a vital component to that!

Registration for next year’s kindergarten is Wednesday, April 1st.  Parents can register their child at the school that day.  If you know someone with a 4 year old, please pass the word to them.

Tuesday, March 24th, is Picture Day.  Please remember to send in a change of clothes for after the picture if your child is wearing a “fancy” outfit.

On Thursday, April 2nd, we will be having an Egg Drop from the roof of our school.  A teacher or a staff member will be dropping your child’s raw egg to see what kind of packing is most effective.  This will be a great learning experience for your child.

On Friday, April 3rd, we will be having an egg hunt.  Please send 12 candy-filled (pre-wrapped candy only, please) plastic eggs by Wednesday, April 1st..  Your child will not need a basket for this egg hunt.  We will hide the eggs at the school and then enjoy the hunt!  Parents are welcomed. but please do not bring other younger children.  This is for kindergarten age only.  Our last day before Spring Break promises to be an exciting one!

Just a reminder that Spring Break will be April 6-10.  Hope you are planning a “memory-making-moment” for your child sometime during that week off from school!

As the days are getting longer and warmer outside, please try to guard your child’s bed time.  They need their rest to be ready for an active day in school.

Report cards will be coming home on March 19th.  This is a communication tool for you to see what we have covered and to know whether your child has shown a mastery of that concept. You may keep the copy of the report card, but sign the enclosed signature card.  Return the signature card in the envelope.  If you have not already done so, please address the envelope to yourself and put TWO “Forever” stamps on it.  The report card at the end of the year will be mailed to you.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  We do not have spring parent conferences officially scheduled on the school calendar, but I would be available to meet with you if you so desire.

Picture Day will be Tuesday, March 24th.  We will be sending home information about ordering spring pictures, if you so desire.  If you would like your child to be dressed in something besides their usual school clothes, please send in a change of clothing so they will not mess up their nice clothes when we go outside for recess.

The Book-in-a-Bag program is going great.  The children are talking about the exciting books they are reading at home with their parents.   Make sure you ask them questions about the book as you are reading.  This develops increased comprehension.  Thank you for your support.

Remember to keep working on those important sight words!  The skills your child is learning will help make him/her a better learner for life.  These are important days!  Enjoy them!

Remember to change your clocks this coming Saturday night.  As the longer days and the warmer weather approaches, please remember that your child needs plenty of sleep in order to function at his/her optimum level.  Daylight Savings Time sometimes makes it harder to stick to your child’s regular bedtime.

Congratulations to Campbell and Zoe for being our March STARS!  Campbell is an excellent student and is very responsible!  Zoe is always eager to be a helper and is very dependable!  Our class is better because of them.

It is so exciting to see your child writing with more confidence and skill.  At least three times a week, we write stories in our journals or on “special” paper.  Each time, we are seeing progress in their hard work.  Keep working on the word list sent home last week.  The more familiar your child gets with these words, the better reader and writer he/she will be. Keep up the good work!

Report cards will be coming home on March 19th.  This is a communication tool for you to see what we have covered and to know whether your child has shown a mastery of that concept.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  We do not have spring parent conferences officially scheduled on the school calendar, but I would be available to meet with you if you so desire.
