BES(T) PE Happenings


MUSIC & MOVEMENT

It's M & M's time at Blackwell. Lace up those tennis shoes and get ready to shake a leg. It's gonna be a great time of music and movement. We are going to create a M & M routine to be shared during class and then voted to perform at school. Cameras will be rolling. Do your Best! Coach and Mrs. Peek are always so impressed with your creative dance and movement. Remember to get you music approved by your grandmother, Mrs. Kozol, Governor Sonny Perdue, President Obama, Mrs. Peek and Coach!!!

PARACHUTE

Kindergarten will be working on Parachute Activities, birthday month activities and manpulatives!. Kindergarteners do you know what month you were born in? If you don't know ask your mom or dad.

FITNESSGRAM

Work on your curl-ups, push-ups, trunk lift and back saver sit and reach. Let's improve those scores from Fall.

Mrs. Stephanye Peek is GA AHPERD Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year


This is Mrs. Peek's 17th year teaching physical education a Blackwell. It has been an honor for her teach at Blackwell and serve with Coach Ransom. She was presented the GA AHPERD Elementary Teacher of the Year at the State Convention in Savannah, GA on Sunday, November 2, 2008. She was also elected President-elect for 2008-2009 of Georgia Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Congratulations, Mrs. Peek!

Girls on the Run 5K

On the morning of Sunday Nov. 16, 2008 at 9:00 AM our Blackwell Team ran the "Girls on the Run 5K" in the blustery, cold weather. We had 22 girls (MaKenzie, Reagan P., Victoria, Ansley, Chelsea, Rachel, Katy, Kya, Madison Crane, Michaelle, Raegan, L, Hannah, Autum, Madison Call, Bella, Araya, Taylor, Meghan, Sierra, Priya, Jasmine, Brittney); 3 coaches (Ms. Poteet, Mrs. Erin and Mrs. Peek), 6 Blackwell parents and 3 GOTR running buddies - Jenn, Kim, and Lindsay (special thanks to you for running with our girls and encouraging them to do their best) running with gusto!

Congratulations to MaKenzie, who came in 1st in her age group with a time of 25:27; Reagan P., who came in 2nd in her age group with a time of 27:48; Ms. Poteet (25:27)and Mrs. Peek (31:23) came in 3rd in their age groups!

Way to go! "Girls on the Run" is so much Fun so let's go Run and Run and Run; We are Hot, We are Cool, We represent the Blackwell School".

Fitnessgram and locomotor skills

1st - 5th graders are participating in the Fitnessgram fitness test. Please encourage you child to do their best. We are working to become the most fit school in Cobb County. This test consist of push-ups, curl-ups, back saver sit and reach, and Pacer.

Kindergarten is working on locomotor skills.
During the Week of September 15 K is starting to learn skipping. Please work with your child at home. The cue words are step hop, step hop... Step on the right foot, hop on the left, step on the left foot, hop on the right and continue this until the skip becomes a smooth movement. We have been practicing this with the music "Skip to my Lou", and this song is very helpful.
The children also learning gallop, slide, hop, walking, running in place, tip toe, skating.

Blackwell One Mile Fun Run

The Blackwell One Mile Fun Run is Saturday, November 8 at the school at 8:30 AM. Students will compete with their grade level groups. Awards will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each grade level K -5th.
Please pick up your application, sign up and run on Saturday the 8th.
Support the Blackwell Foundation. It's $10 per student.
Come join in the fun and afterwards there is a festival until noon!

Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run is a running program for girls in grades 3 - 5. It consists of 12 weeks of running and training for a 5K which will be run on Sunday, Nov. 16. There are  26 girls participating in the fall program.
Mrs. Stephanye Peek is the coach and she has five assistants: Ms. Meredith Poteet, Mrs. Ann Dennis,
Mrs. Debra O'Dell, Mrs. Erin Griffin and Ms. Stacy Schindler. We meet every Thursday from 2:30 - 4 from September 4 - December 4 with our final celebration in the media center.

Let's get Fit and Stay Fit for Life!

Coach and Mrs. Peek want to welcome you back to Blackwell for school year 2008-2009.

We have a new gym floor. Please help us protect it. Only tennis shoes in the gym.

Homework for PE: Take home Dear Parents letter on the August 11th read it to your parents (K and 1 have your parents read it to you) and return signed form to your homeroom teacher by the August 15th. Please have your parents sign it and you sign it too stating that both you and your parents have read it and understand.   ? or concerns see Coach or Mrs.Peek or email us.

All students need to continue to work on your pull-ups, sit-ups, running, flexibility, because in the next few weeks we will be participating in the President's Physical Fitness Test ( 1st - 5th grades) and the FITNESSGRAM will be introduced to all grades but scores in 4th and 5th grades will be recorded.

Let's strive to become the most Fit school in Cobb County!

Box Tops for Education - Summer contest ends on Friday, September 12th! Please turn in all box tops to Mrs. Peek in a plastic bag or envelope with your name, grade and teachers last name, and make sure they are cut out neatly! Count them and write the total number on the outside, too. Thanks for your help!

Girls on the Run and more!

Team Blackwell "Girls on the Run" completed their 3rd season on Dec. 6, 2007.

Special thanks to the girls, their parents, Mrs. Collins, Mrs. O'Dell, Mrs. Griffin, Ms Poteet, Mrs. Pope, and Mrs. Cross for all your help in making "Girls on the Run is so much Fun so let's go run".

Thanks to Mrs. Kozol, our principal, for supporting our program.

And thanks to Lisa Dick and Texas Roadhouse for sponsoring us and donating Team Blackwell t-shirts for us to wear on Thursdays and to our races.

Congratulations to Reagan ( 2nd in 10 and under Girls), MaKenzie ( 3rd in 10 and under Girls), Caroline, Anna, Sydnee, Kya, Chelsea, Hannah B., Ansley, Brittney, Cheyenne, Angelina, Casey, Emily, Echo, Hannah S., Autum, Mrs. O'Dell, Mrs. Collins, Mrs. Griffin, Ms Poteet, Mrs. Pope ( and daughters Rachel and Rebecca), and Mrs. Cross for running the "Unpugged for Kids 5K on Nov. 18, 2007, and all that drove down to South Atlanta to watch their children run. Blackwell welcomes Greg Potthast - student teacher from KSU

We are so happy to have Coach Greg Potthast student teaching with us at Blackwell. He started with us on September 20 and will be with us until November 16. He has taught us how to be better endurance runners; how to Pace ourselves in the  PACER; how to trap, pass and dribble in soccer and play lead-up games; and soon he will be teaching us Jump Rope skills. We have been honored to have him. He has done an outstanding job of teaching Elementary Physical Education.

Coach Potthast has been helping with coaching Cross Country at Hilgrove.He is a great runner and came in 4th overall at the “Make a Wish 5K”. Best Wishes as you graduate from KSU with a B.S. in Health and Physical Education on December 13.

Free to all Public School Students - See Mrs. Peek for an application.

Health Fair on the Square from 7:30 - 3. There will be health screenings: as well as, carnival area for a fun and exciting day. arts and crafts, food sales and other music and entertainment!

Let's go Blackwell and be a part of this wellness activity!
