Due to the weather, field day has been postponed. A makeup date has not been set.
Career Day is Thursday, May 7. The children will hear speakers on various occupations. They may dress up in clothes that represent the occupation they would like to pursue.
We will begin reading the novel The Westing Game next week. It is a mystery that will have the children trying to figure out who commits a crime.
Only six more days until the CRCT. It is hard to believe that it starts next Tuesday. The children will be bringing home a letter concerning the test on Thursday. We have been doing some practice at school this week. Please remember the children can also practice using Skills Tutor or using the state website (You were given a letter earlier in the semester about this.) at home. The information on Skills Tutor is stapled to their agendas.
J.J.Daniell parents should have received an email concerning elections for that school's school council for next year. What a great opportunity to get involved with your child's new school!
It is finally here! The children are really looking forward to our field trip on Monday to Fernbank, the Jewish Heritage Center, and Hard Rock Cafe. We will start loading the buses at 8:15. If you are chaperoning please stop by the front office to sign in and meet us in the lobby on our way to the buses. Please meet us in the bus port area at 5:30 for pick up. It should be an exciting day!
The children will be bringing home information about an opportunity for them to practice for the CRCT online at home. We will be going to the computer lab to introduce them to the program, Skill Tutor, this week.
Spring Break will be Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 10. We hope everyone relaxes and enjoys their time off, and that they come back ready to conquer the CRCT.
In social studies the children have been studying The Cold War years. They are learning about communism, The Berlin Wall and Airlift, The Korean War, and The Cuban Missile Crisis.

In science the next area of study will be constructive and destructive forces on Earth. Among other things they will be discussing floods, volcanoes, sand dunes, earthquakes, dams, and flood control.
The children will bringing home an information packet about an author project for the last nine weeks of school in their Tuesday folder next week. Most of the work will be done at school, but some will need to be done at home. Please look for the information.
Monday, March 3 is Read Across America day. Our class will be making bookmarks for the Media Center to pass out and will be listening to a guest reader in the Media Center. We will also be chilling out on beach towels to read for part of our day. Please encourge your child to bring a beach towel to school on Monday

Please remember that Tuesday, March 3 is an Early Release Day. The children will be release two hours early on that day.
Wednesday, March 4, is the 5th Grade Writing Assessment. We are working on narrative writing this nine weeks, but will review the other genres (persuasive and informational) that will be on test. We will also review with the children how to interpret a writing prompt.
In social studies we are focusing on the Holocaust. During our field trip on Monday, March 30 we will be visiting the Jewish Heritage Center. The children will have great background knowledge for our trip and will be able to have a better understanding of the material presented to them at the museum.
