Math - We've begun reviewing Multiplication skills. PLEASE make sure to practice multiplication facts at home as often as possible. Students should have mastered 0-10s last year and now are responsible for 0-12s with fluency this year.
We also started today with key vocabulary words (factor, product, array, multiple, product) and then worked on backwards arrays. Ask your child how figure out the product of a backwards array. We will be continuing our work with arrays, the area model, and then working on partial product. As we continue our work, I put up some examples on the blog for parents to use as a resource. The reason we spend so much time on the area model as well is partial product is so the students have a visual way to understand the distributive property. More details and examples of models to come!
Science - We wil be finishing up our weather unit this week. Today we spent some time looking at weather maps from the newspaper. Students will be explaining the forecast based on the map they've been given. They have learned to use weather symbols, color-coded temperature charts and other parts of weather maps to interpret the forecast. They also looked up the 5-day forecast of a city of their choosing on weather.com.
Social Studies - This week we will be beginning our study of Native Cultures. Students will be working in groups to conduct research on regions and specific tribes to learn more about culture, environment, etc. Groups will choose a final project as a way to share what they've learned.
Writing - We have continued to work on descriptive and narrative writing. Our main focus for mini-lessons have been using sensory details to "paint a picture" in the readers mind as well as writng engaging hooks to grab the readers attention. Students are making progress as we work our way through the writing process.
