Science and Social Studies Update

The past two weeks have seen our class studying about weather and the four seasons. We have been looking at what you would see during the four seasons, who cares about the weather, what type of clothes you would or would not wear and why.  We will wrap up the unit by looking at our weather station and exploring ways to measure the weather. 

We will also be looking at the globe and figuring out our global address.  It is really simple; we live at a certain street address, in a city, in a county, in a state, in a country, on Earth.  We will be using this as our introduction to landforms and the globe.

First Graders Continue with Phonics

First graders continue to work on their reading and studying of high frequency words.  This week we will study of the word family -ad with a look at "houses" of word families.  Click here to go to some Word Family Fun .

Here is another reading activity that you can follow along and hear the what the word is as you point to it.  Join Zac the Rat as he explores the short "a" vowel sound.

Making Words is also a great game to play incorporating thinking and spelling skills.

Open House is This Tuesday!

Open House is this Tuesday!  PTA will hold a brief meeting beginning at 6:30pm.  After the meeting, parents may go to their student's classroom and meet the teacher and hear the presentation about the classroom. 

At 5:30 pm, Mrs. Hodges will be holding a TARGET meeting for those parents that have questions regarding the TARGET/Gifted program.  It will be over at 6:30, in time for the Open House.

Media Center is Now Being Utilized by Class!

We have had our first lesson in the library--an introduction to checking out books and taking care of them.  They were able to check out a book that they will keep in their cubbie to read during SOAR time or to Mrs. Griffith.  Each time we go to the library, they will be able to check out one book.  They must keep it for at least one day. 

Our next lesson will be on Monday.  We will return our books from last week and have another fun lesson from Mrs. Fowler on the different types of books. 

CogAT Testing Dates Are Announced!

CogAT testing for First Grade will be Wednesday thru Friday, September 29th-October 1st. 

Please make sure your student is here on time those three days. has a good night sleep and has a healthy snack. Healthy snacks could be grapes and crackers, apples, pretzels for example.

Student Council Food Drive is Going on Now!

Food Drive

Our school is participating in a food drive for MUST Ministries. Their food pantry is in most need of the following items:

canned chicken, ham, tuna, salmon, or protein of any kind, flour, instant potatoes, jelly, dry milk, oatmeal, grits, canned beans, spaghetti sauce, canned spaghetti meals, tomatoes or tomato sauce, dry beans, rice, boxed diners, macaroni & cheese, and spaghetti.

However, any item you send to put in our food barrels will be most appreciated.The food barrels will be located in the school lobby.
