On January 9, 2009, Blackwell implemented a PAPER recycling program that we are very excited about! This is our first attempt as a school to become more aware of our environment and become “greener”. PTA provided each student a blue bag in which paper products can be collected from home and then brought to school and recycled. They are encouraged to bring in items as often as they would like. Each classroom has a box or bin for the paper to be placed into. The 5th grade “Green Peer Helpers” come by and pick it up from each classroom. They put the items in a central location in the school and then it is put into the green bin in the parking lot. The following is a list of acceptable paper materials: white paper, colored paper, newspaper, telephone books, catalogs/magazines, junk mail, white envelopes (even with windows), and index cards. The following is NOT acceptable: construction paper, paper with crayon or glue on it, waxed paper, laminated paper, any type of cardboard, plastics, glass, and aluminum. As we move forward, we will venture into recycling other items as well. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support of this very important program!!!
It's the time of year that we start preparing for next year's board. In order to begin the process of looking for potential board members for the 2009-2010 school year, a Nominating Committee must first be elected. The primary role of this committee is to evaluate possible candidates and prepare a slate of nominees for election. The committee will consist of 5 members and 1 alternate. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please submit your name and contact information (phone number and/or e-mail) to the current board at blackwell_pta@yahoo.com. All names submitted will be placed on the ballot and voted on at the General Membership Meeting on February 3rd. Please feel free to contact us with any questions at the aforementioned e-mail address.
Also, be on the lookout for a letter coming home with your child concerning election of officers for the 2009-2010 PTA Board. Positions will be open and you are encouraged to submit your name. Once the Nominating Committee is selected you will be contacted regarding your interest. Officers will be elected at the March 5th General Membership Meeting.

Get Your Financial House in Order
The term “New Year’s Resolution” is generally associated with goals of weight loss or spending more quality time with family. Let’s try something new for 2009; let’s resolve to get our Financial House in Order.
Considering the current economic status of our country, this may prove to be a daunting task. Americans need to resolve to save more, spend less and pay off as much debt as possible. Take the first steps toward financial wellbeing with these helpful tips:
Make the commitment: Commit to yourself and those around you to take better care of your finances in 2009. Sharing your goal with someone close to you will not only give you a sense of pride, it will also keep you accountable.
Set yourself up for success: Figure out exactly where you stand financially so that you can make a realistic goal. It is important to be sensible so that you are not overwhelmed or discouraged. Try breaking down large goals into smaller tasks. You will be sure to get an extra boost of confidence every time you meet a goal.
Get organized: Come up with an at-home payable system. A small file cabinet with a folder for each standard expense is a great place to start. This will not only simplify the task of paying bills, it will also be a life-saver if you ever have the need to research a past payment.
Check your credit reports: There are 3 major credit bureaus: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. It is important to get a copy of your credit report from each of these bureaus, as different companies sometimes report to different credit bureaus. You may have great credit on one report and less than great credit on another. Check for errors and fraudulent information. Keep in mind that negative information can negatively affect everything from a future car or home loan to a prospective job.
